Betty Danner has an extensive background in bringing
together diverse groups to directly address reducing
crime. As former director of the Santa Cruz Criminal
Justice Council, she found ways for law enforcement and
local defense attorneys to work together to get people
off drugs and to address domestic violence. Crime in our
community is in need of immediate attention.

Here are some ways Betty can make
a difference:
 |
Meet with
community groups and individuals to address
immediate concerns. |
 |
Call on her
long relationships with law enforcement,
prosecutors, the legal community and treatment
providers. |
 |
Further develop community activities in the
First District to address problems by providing
constructive activities for young people. |
 |
Support current
levels of funding as well as encourage new
funding to help law enforcement step up its
level of service in the First District. |

First District neighborhoods have long been subject to
the strain and demand of growth in Santa Cruz County.
The First District has taken more than its share of high
density housing, with sometimes haphazard improvement of
infrastructure. Incumbent Jan Beautz has helped slow
down the onslaught, and the First District needs someone
who will continue that work, independent of outside
pressures.
Here are some ways Betty can help:
 |
Meet and confer
with members of each unique community that makes
up the First District, from the Summit, to
Soquel, To Live Oak. Some neighborhoods need
better sidewalks; others need attention to their
roads. |
 |
Maintain
independence from other political forces who
would seek to impost their own development
standards on our community. |
 |
Using experience gained while working within the
County Administrative Office, she will read in
depth every report on every proposed development
to ensure that environmental and neighborhood
protection is foremost. |
 |
Advocate for
sensible Planning Department procedures to
prevent applicants from being stuck in a
planning maze. |
|
|

More than 5,000 people live in mobile homes in the First
District. Mobile homes are the best and for some the
only form of affordable housing in Santa Cruz County.
They need to know that they won’t be priced out of their
own homes. At the same time, mobile home rent control is
a complex issue. We all need to work together to ensure
that solutions are workable.

Here are some ways that Betty can make a difference:
 |
Protect
affordable rents in First District mobile home
parks. |
 |
Strongly
support residents of mobile home parks in
purchasing of the parks they live in so as to
secure their futures. |
|

The First District is a special and diverse place. We
have at least 10 unique communities within the district.
All share some common concerns: traffic, jobs, access to
health care and cost of living. Some need special
attention, whether it’s fixing roads, building
infrastructure or even just making sure that things stay
as they are.

Here are some ways that Betty can
make a difference:
 |
Expanding
car-pool and bus lanes on Highway 1 in order to
get traffic off First District streets. |
 |
Focusing on the
local economy by encouraging small business.
County processes can be confusing, but as
supervisor, Danner will actively work to help
those without the resources to untangle red
tape. |
 |
Making our neighborhoods safe again by working
with both law enforcement and community groups
on new initiatives and more enforcement. |
